Jade shifted, the cold air rousing her from her sleep. It was still rather early, but she knew she wouldn't be falling back asleep anytime soon. "Sometimes I hate having short fur..." She grumbled, silently feeling a bit envious of Volkner and his much longer and thicker fur. "The only thing keeping me from freezing at night is this warm rock.." She stands, stretching, and padded out into the hall of the twoleg nest, looking around. The light of morning wasn't even showing yet. "Which means he's still asleep..." A small smirk pulled at her orange muzzle and she looked down the hall towards the 'forbidden' side of the twoleg nest. "I'm sure he wouldn't mind if I just poked around a bit.." With a for-sure nod, the young she-cat quietly padded off down the hall towards the rooms, quickly finding the 'off-limits' area Volkner had warned her of when she had first started staying here. She frowned as she looked up at the wood, the reared up and put her paws against it, pushing with a soft grunt.

Volkner though was a light sleeper and the hinges of the doors were old and rusty, resulting in many a squeaky door. As soon as the door made a sound, his ear twitched. Then golden eyes slowly opened and his pupils widened into disks. Slowly he stretched and looked around for the source before growling softly.

Jade slowly stepped into the room, her head swiveling as she looked around with her good eye. The green orb stopped on a yellow glimmer that sat on an oddly formed tree next to another one of those rock things, and she jumped up onto the piece and padded over to the glimmering item that she quickly recognized as a kittypet collar. "Why's this in here...?" She wondered out loud. "And why does he have it?" She slowly reached out a flame colored paw, touching the collar as she inspected it curiously.

Volkner swiftly dashed up the stairs as rain pounded on the roof and glass windows. With a furious, frightening look he suddenly leapt and attacked Jade. "GET OUT!!"he yowled in fury.

Jade yowled as he slammed into her, sending her tumbling off the rock to the hard floor below with a thump. Her fur fluffed out as she shot back up, the look on his face sending a chill down her spine. In a couple of heartbeats, she had spun around and was tearing down the stairs and out of the twoleg nest into the harsh, cold rain outside. The she-cat didn't dare look back, for fear he was right on her tail, but after what seemed like an eternity, she slowly and looked back, relief flooding her pelt when she didn't see him. She slowed to a stop, looking around, but didn't recognize where she was. She lifted her muzzle in the air, and froze at the scent that hit her. Fox..

Volkner panted as he jumped onto the scartching tree and put the collar back in the little den. A look of grief and pain on his face. He had done it again; his temper had exploded and chased yet another cat away. "I gotta go after her, make sure she's alright."he whispered. His ears perked as thunder and lightning crashed from the storm. He then heard the barks and snarls of a fox. "Not him again!"he thought. Swiftly as his paws could take him he dashed down the stairs and out through one of the cracks in the wooden wall and followed after her scent. Before long he jumped over her Jade with fangs and claws bared as lightning flashed and started wrestling and tussling with the fox in a spitting ball of rage. He faught like a furious beast, a wolf or dog that was spitting mad. Before long the fox ran away with it's tail between it's legs and Volkner was a bloody mess, literally. He panted as he locked his peircing gaze on Jade, panting heavily. The look in his eyes, w-was that concern actually showing?Jade's eyes widen as she slid back, watching as Volkner jumped into the fight with the creature. Pain seared her tail and shoulder where she had been bit and scratched, but the sting was forgotten as the fox ran away and her eye fell on the bloody tom before her. Terrifying as he was, he had just saved her life. She slowly made her way over to his side, her pelt brushing his. "Come on.. you're hurt..." She said softly, slowly helping him back to the twoleg nest and to his nest. "I'll be right back. Don't move." She meowed, turning and trotting off down the hall to find some cobwebs from the older arears of the nest.

"Why are you helping him?" A small voice asked. "He's hurt, you can leave now. Run away. He won't find you, he won't live to find you or Copperpaw, he'll die here." The she-cat shook her head. "But I don't want him to die.."

"What's that? You don't want him to die? You're gonna help him? You realize if you do that you're gonna be stuck here. There will be no going back to Copperpaw, no getting revenge on Coal. No getting revenge on your family."

"So? I'll always have time to teach him- no, teach them- a lesson. So what if he's keeping me here against my will? He's still rather kind.." She shrugged, blocking out the voice as she trotted back, gently pressing the cobwebs against the wounds. "I'm no healer or anything... I don't exactly know what else to do other than this..." She admitted to him quietly, not moving her eye from the wounds on his pelt.

Volkner gave no protest and used Jade for some support as he limped back. As he lied down he winced  and looked at her with a strange look of innocence. Why was she helping him? he had tried to hurt her back in the room not long ago. He started to groom the mud and blood and rain out of his fur, mindful of the tender wounds. By the time she had got back and was trying to treat him, he simply looked baffled as his tail twitch. "Youch watch where put those paws."hissed Volkner rather childishly. But he was quick to try and real in his temper. "I'm sorry."he mewed under his breath.

"I don't think your in any position to be telling me what to do." Jade meowed sharply. Her tail twitched, and she winced at the movement. "I could just leave you for dead." She continued pressing down the cobwebs till most of the bleeding had stopped. "But i'm not gonna..." She stepped back, nodding her head slightly as she tried to remember what Coal had used on the wound he had given her, but couldn't seem to recall the name or appearance of it. "I don't know what else to use.. you'll have to make do with the cobwebs unless you know." She meowed softly, turning her gaze away from him, seeming to be uncomfortable with meeting his gaze.

"There is an old greenhouse behind the twoleg den. in there you'll find some marigold and poppies."he sighed as he rested his head on his paws. "pick some and bring them here."he grunted slightly from the pain.

Jade nodded and padded back out of the den, heading towards the back of it and into the greenhouse, picking some of the herbs and trotting back, setting them beside him. "Alright, now what?" She asked, looking at the herbs.

"Come here and lie down."he mewed. Volkner took the marigold petals and swiftly chewed them up and stiffly sat up and put it on her bite wound then put some where he could reach on his own wounds. Then he scraped off some poppy seeds and ate some before handing some to her. "Marigold for infection, poppy for pain. A trick an old kittypet  of a twoleg gardener taught me."

Jade tilted her head, slowly taking the poppy and eating it. "Why's he being so kind to me all of the sudden...?" She thought as she swallowed the seeds, shivering slightly at the taste. "Well.. you should probably rest... get your strength back up..." She mumbled, looking to the side. Truthfully she wanted to ask him about the collar, but she knew now wasn't the time.

"Same to you. The poppy seeds will help you sleep and kill the pain."he yawned.

Jade nodded in reply, standing up and turning away. "Alright.. Well goodnight Volkner." She meowed, starting towards the door, pausing just in the frame. "And... thank you, for saving me." A light blush dusted her cheeks as she padded out, making her way back up the stairs to her den. She jumped up into the rock nest, looking around before laying down, resting her paws on her head and closing her eyes. "Maybe... he's not so bad after all..." She thought as she drifted off to sleep.
